[Tristan] We evolved to care about whether other people in our tribe think well of us or not cause it matters. [Roger] So, imagine youre on Facebook and youre effectively playing against this artificial intelligence that knows everything about you, can anticipate your next move, and you know literally nothing about it, except that there are cat videos and birthdays on it. Because then it forces you into this vicious cycle where youre like, Whats the next thing I need to do now? Send a wave. You can stay disconnected as long as you want. It is tearing our country apart. And its not like were lab rats for developing a cure for cancer. Fake news is becoming more advanced and threatening societies around the world. The media has this exact same problem, where their business model, by and large, is that theyre selling our attention to advertisers. Host virtual events and webinars to increase engagement and generate leads. [interviewer] Is that a rule, or is that a. Theyre deeply interconnected with each other and running extremely complicated programs, sending information back and forth between each other all the time. [Tristan] Notice that many people in the tech industry dont give these devices to their own children. And then it would change the entry. Thats another way to fight. 75. Its not like theyre trying to benefit us. [Sandy] Reduce the number of notifications you get. And over time, by running these constant experiments, you you develop the most optimal way to get users to do what you want them to do. Eventually, this culminated in a man showing up with a gun, deciding that he was gonna go liberate the children from the basement of the pizza place that did not have a basement. [Joe] We could tax data collection and processing the same way that you, for example, pay your water bill by monitoring the amount of water that you use. And instead, what it really is is fake, brittle popularity thats short-term and that leaves you even more, and admit it, vacant and empty before you did it. All the social media apps, all the news apps, and Ive turned off notifications on anything that was vibrating my leg with information that wasnt timely and important to me right now. Social media is a drug. I shouldnt trust anyone. Surveillance capitalism has come to shape our politics and culture in ways many people dont perceive. And I sent this presentation to about 15, 20 of my closest colleagues at Google, and I was very nervous about it. [Tim Kendall] I was the president of Pinterest. Theyre pulling people away from their kids. I mean, I I feel it. I feel like were headed toward dystopia. 2018. [Tristan] Photoshop didnt have 1,000 engineers on the other side of the screen, using notifications, using your friends, using AI to predict whats gonna perfectly addict you, or hook you, or manipulate you, or allow advertisers to test 60,000 variations of text or colors to figure out whats the perfect manipulation of your mind. [Alex Roetter] I worked at Twitter. [vlogger] Because climate change? We did that brilliantly at Facebook. And it subjugates people into this weird role where youre just, like, this little computing element that were programming through our behavior manipulation for the service of this giant brain, and you dont matter.
